Sheelite History
Scheelite was first discovered in the late 1700s in Sweden but was not officially named “scheelite” until 1821. It was named for Carl Wilhelm Scheele, a Swedish chemist and commercial apothecary. He conducted experimental work that, for the time period, was quite monumental and is credited with discovering chlorine tungsten. His work also included experimenting with oxygen prior to it being recognized as an element by Joseph Priestley. In 1781, he also proved that tungstic oxide was present in the mineral that would later bear his name.

Sheelite's Physical Properties
Scheelite crystals belong to the tetragonal crystal system and appear as dipyramidal pseudo-octahedra. They may also occur in massive, granular, or columnar forms. This mineral occurs in igneous and metamorphic rock in high-temperature hydrothermal veins and greisen, metamorphic skarns, and, occasionally, granite pegmatites. It is usually found in tin-bearing veins, sometimes with gold. It is quite rare but has been found in Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. This mineral is prized by collectors for its brilliant color. It usually forms in shades of golden yellow, pale yellow, yellow-orange, brownish-green, red, green, dark brown, or reddish-gray. Scheelite ranges from transparent to opaque and has a vitreous to adamantine luster. Specimens strongly fluoresce bluish-white under ultraviolet light.
