Barite Chemical Composition
• Hardness: 3 to 3.5
• Composition: Barium Sulfate
Barite is a barium sulfate crystal that is commonly found in sedimentary rock layers. One signature mark of Barite is its heavy weight compared to other minerals which are much lighter. It is most frequently found in a tabular pattern although rosettes or granular shapes can also occur. One of the more common occurrences of Barite is a rosette formation referred to as the 'desert rose.' Barite is usually found colorless or white, but due to impurities within the crystal may become light blue, green, red, or brown. It is the main ore of Barium and is widely utilized in the production of paper, textiles, plastics, and rubber. Barite forms alongside Calcite, Fluorite, Aragonite, Chalcopyrite, Gypsum, Dolomite, Quartz, Apatite and Vanadinite. Significant deposits of Barite are located in England, Romania, Morocco, and the USA
