History of Fluorite
After their conquest of Britain, the Romans extracted Fluorite to send back to the Roman Empire. The Roman historian, Pliny the Elder, revered this mineral so much that he stated his "most precious substance" was Fluorite. Romans believed that drinking alcoholic beverages from vessels made from Purple Fluorite would keep the drinker from being intoxicated; this is probably due to its color association to Amethyst. Ornaments and carvings out of Fluorite have also been recovered from the ruins of Pompeii.
