History of Celestite
Celestite received its name from the Latin caelestis, which means celestial or heavenly, in reference to the angelic blue colors of the Celestite crystals. Celestite is said to have come from the star group called the Pleiades. It is supposed to hold the wisdom of the ages and to promote truth. When one holds a piece of Celestite, no lies may be told or the listener will know immediately that what was said is untrue.
• • • Chemical Composition of Celestite • Hardness: 3 to 3.5 • Crystal System: Orthorhombic • Composition: Strontium Sulfate Also known as Celestine, Celestite is a strontium sulfate mineral that is essentially colorless but found in a range of colors due to impurities present within the crystal. The most common color is light blue, which is often caused by irradiation of gold, but it can also be found in white, colorless, orange, yellow, green, reddish or brown. This light blue color may be present throughout the whole specimen, or may only be confined to one area. Celestite crystals will fade overtime if exposed to direct sunlight. Celestite occurs as prismatic and tabular crystals, and as thin tabular plates. It may also occur in massive, fibrous, granular or nodular configurations. The most readily available Celestite on the market is a gray-blue variety from Madagascar that comes in the form of clusters or geodes. A more desirable variety is Ohio Celestite, which commonly forms in single gray, white or blue-gray tabular crystals from under an inch to over eight inches long. Significant deposits of Celestite can be found in the United Kingdom, Poland, Libya, Madagascar, Italy, Peru, Mexico, Egypt and the USA.
